The problem

The customer needed replacement and backup parts for an organically shaped carbon fibre race seat with no existing moulds or drawings.

Constraints

A one-off, hand-laid compound surface that had to be captured exactly as laid, on a same-day turnaround.

Development approach

Scanned the seat at 0.2mm and cleaned the capture into a watertight mesh, ready for the customer's CAD and mould design.

Hand-laid carbon parts are one-offs by nature — there’s no mould on a shelf and no drawing to fall back on. To make backups, you first have to capture the original.

We scanned the seat at 0.2mm, picking up its compound curves and organic surface exactly as laid, and cleaned the capture into a watertight mesh ready for CAD.

The scan was turned around the same day. From there the customer modelled a new mould and started producing replicas and spares for their racing program.

Structured-light lines sweep the organic carbon surface during the 0.2mm scan.

The outcome

From the scan the customer modelled a new mould and produced replicas and backup parts for their racing program.
